Who's Who in New York, 1904 in NY City and State, LR Hammersly Co, NYC p.526LTC Col-Corps of Engineers, USA, born 2 Jun 1844, Pen Yan son of Rev Clinton W and Angeline (Brooks) Sears; enlisted as private in Co G, Ninety-fifth OH Vol Inf, 24 Jul 1862, and served as corporal during the campaign in KY and TN in battles of Richmond, KY, Perryville, KY and Stone River, TN, and as acting color sergeant Vicksburg campaign; in both assaults on Vicksburg and two attacks on Jackson, MS; upon the nomination of Generals Sherman and Grant was appointed by President Lincoln, a cadet at the US Military Academy, 15 Sep 1863; was graduated from there 17 Jun 1867; third in a class of sixty-three members, and assigned to the Engineer Corps by commissions as second and first lieutenant, 17 Jun 1867; served continuously since then as an officer of the Engineer Corps on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, on the Northern Lakes, on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, in the Yellowstone National Park, upon the Southern rivers and in the Phillipine Islands, having had charge of various large and important public works of rivers and harbor improvement; commissioned captain, 9 Apr 1880; major, 20 Sep 1892, and lieutenant colonel Corps of Engineers, 21 Apr 1903; member of Society of Mayflower descendants, Colonial Wars, Foreign Wars, Sons of the Revolution, Military Order Loyal Legion, St Nicholas, University and Army and Navy Clubs, New York and of Metropolitan and Army and Navy Clubs, Wash DC; Fellow National Academy of Design, NY.
