JoAnnHardin Morgan(December 4,1940) is anAmericanaerospace engineerwhowas the first female engineer at the National Aeronautics and SpaceAdministration (NASA)John F. Kennedy SpaceCenterand the first woman to serve as a seniorexecutive at Kennedy Space Center. For her work at NASA, Morgan was honored byU.S. PresidentBill Clintonas aMeritorious Executive in 1995 and 1998. Prior to her retirement in 2003, sheheld various leadership positions over 40 years in themanned space flightprogramsat NASA. Morgan served as the director of the External Relations and BusinessDevelopment during her final years at the space center. JoAnnHardin, the oldest child of four children of Don and Laverne Hardin, was borninHuntsville, AlabamaonDecember 4, 1940, near where her father was stationed as a U.S. Army pilotatRedstone ArsenalduringWorld War Two.While she was in high school, her familyrelocated toTitusville, Floridawhereher father worked atCape Canaveralasan ordnance administrator in the U.S. Army's rocket program. There she met herfuture husband, Larry Morgan. Immediately after graduating from high school inJune 1958, she joined theArmy Ballistic MissileAgencyat Cape Canaveral as a civilian engineering aide.Inthe Fall of 1958, Hardin enrolled at the University of Florida inGainesvillewhere shestudied mathematics.[5]During her summer breaks, she continued to workat Cape Canaveral under mentors such as German-American engineerWernher von Braun. In her work as an engineering aide, Hardinhad hands-on experience designing rocket launch computer systems for theinitial NASA flight programs. After Hardin earned a Bachelor of Arts inmathematics at theJacksonville StateUniversityin Alabama in 1963, she went to work for NASA at theKennedy Space Center as an aerospace engineer.
